It's still important to do water changes Because the increased bacterial population will also consume good nutrients. I would not recomend vodka/carbon dosing to anyone looking for a lower maintenance system. It is quite the opposite of low maintenance imo

i have a denitrator, and it works on the same idea. its a large cube that is a still anerobic safe haven for denitrifing bacteria. I dose it vodka every 3 to 4 days. when i do i get a huge bacterial bloom within the unit. anyway my point is that my nitrates are almost nonexistant, and i do waterchanges once every 1 1/2 to 2 months sometimes longer.

I have a coil denitrator that I dosed vodka for the past month, the effluent is 0 nitrate but the tank is still showing 10ppm. I started to dosed directly into the tank.

Did you ever dose the tank directly?

nope. how long have you had it running? i know that it takes a long time to bring down your over all nitrates because rock and sand store it like a sponge. eventualy it will go down.
