scwd in my return?

Hey guys I have a 90 gl. tank that it's eurobraced (oceanic tech tank). In the back, the eurobrace piece has 4 1" holes that I'm planning to use all for my return line. I'm planning to hook up a SCWD to this. Does anyone see a problem with this??
The reason I ask it's because I have never seen anyone with a SCWD in their return but rather used only in a closed loop.:splitspin

I have a 3/4" SCWD in my return line to two 3/4" bulkheads and have had no problem with it so far.

Ok thanks darkdrako. Just wanted to make sure it was kosher to do so since it seems very few have it set up this way.

SCWD's will start to show problems right around the 1.5 yr mark - especially if you are using it on a reef - calcium and alkalinity build up causes it to stick etc. Great cheap alternative to flow distribution, but make sure you have a way to take it on and off once a year to run with vinegar.

if you're running fish only, it will be less likely a problem as the water parameters are less likely to cause it to stick.

Thanks House. I'm aware of this issue. I do plan to run a full SPS system so yes I'm anticipating doing maintanance on the SCWD. Other than this I hear that they're reliable and cheap!

You're more planned than i was when i had one. I had one on my 92g corner bowfront sps, fish everywhere, crazy stocked tank. When it got stuck, I hit it with the heavy end of a butter knife

Running one now with a Kalk and CA reactor, with an Iwaki return pump, no probs! But as mentioned, it will need maintenance, just like the rest of your equipment. Good luck!

Scwd are hit or miss, I have used 4-5 of them in 4 years. Some u have to replace after 2 months, while one that I had lasted over 2 years. When they go bad, even cleaning doesnt work, and its usually stuck in one position. At least they are cheap to replace. Its a good device nevertheless.

Oh wow, I didnt know that. Unfortunately I am using 3/4 in. But thanks for the info.

I plan to use the 1" SCWD. I'll probably buy a second one for when I need to clean the first one.

This is one of the newer ones in return, it is running off an Iwaki. It is easy to maintain and clean. If you are worried about servicing it, I would recommend using Unions on the input and outputs for for easy removal. If you are using a pressure rated pump, I recommend using PVC so that there is no chance of a leaky connection and hose clamps.
