How much live rock is need for a sump that is 29 gallons? And more importantly is there a theory about how many gallons a sump should be compared to the main tank?
it totally depends on how much water you want to pass through the sump.
for example i got my 75 gallon im going to do a 20gallon sump with about 10-20lbs of live rock. im going to have the live rock sit in where the water comes infrom the main tank or in the refegium part. cause if i place the live rock in the middle part/refugium you can throw some filter socks filled with live sand attached to the pipe that leads into the sump.
I am because of 2 things Cost and it seems that it makes things alot easier with water changes and such. Plus you also have a tank where you can put fish that may need to be removed from the main tank to heal and such as well. But before I do I want to make absolutely sure I know as much as possible. My upgrade to the 75 is about 6-8 months away and that is because of the research I want to do and because of the cost.
chief let me no if ya eva wanna talk ova anything i will be more than happy to help you or anyone else that i can. deanos is the man with the links. hehe.
I was told you only fill it up halfway not all of the way to allow for a power outage. Also What's in your sump besides LR and a Protien skimmer? Can people post pics of their sumps so I can get a general feel as to what they look like. I see DIY plans but no good pics of actual sumps "working".
heres a easy setup for you. depending on how big your tank is you could use this layout i found it somewhere i forget. u can also add another baffle were you see the water pipe comming in. add a sock with live sand to that pipe. then add the live rock in the middle with the skimmer and heater and then you got 3 baffles were it goes over under over and back to the tank with the right pump..
