yea do that with the mag float.

also is your tank in direct or indirect sunlight.

if you have your tank lights on 2 long that can also promote algae.
i would cut back 1 to 2 hours that might help. also make sure you have enough water circulation that also helps.

The algae right may just be a sign of things to come. You know how some of us alway preach about PATIENCE and doing things right? What water did you use to fill your tank firstly. How much time did you take before you started stocking the tank? Did you let nature take its course or did you use some chemicals in a bottle during the curing process?

I for one always take my time. Generally I let the tank just sit there for about three months before I add anything. Patience........

So when you ask what the cause is, the answer is nutrients. The question of how it got there can be answered by you. what steps did you take when setting up your tank? How much time did you take when setting up your tank? Stocking levels in your tank and ofcourse what kind of equipment is running in your tank. Give us those answers and we can tell you the right answer.

Ok. So a little history of my tank. I had a FW setup for about 3 months. Got introduced to SW and decided to change it up. Gave all the FW fish back to my LFS and then bought about 16lbs of LR with CC, T5 lights and let that sit for about a month. Then bought some crabs cuz i had a brown algae outbreak. Crabs cleaned it up in about 2 days. Then bought the tang (a couple days ago). Then got the outbreak of green algae on glass. Today, bought 5 turbo snails and as of now, they are munchin away. I have a very basic setup. Aquaclear filter, heater, T5 lights and LR. That's about it. I'm in the process of getting more LR for the filtration. If i can provide any more info to clear things up let me know! Thanks

Where is Rich?? He will tell you to get a skimmer:lol:, a big a$$ one too.

Green "dust" looking algae growing on the glass is okay, a mag cleaner will clean that right up. Its pretty normal, I clean my glass about every 3 days.

What size tank do you have? did you say CC as Crushed Coral? You didn't say what kind of water you are using to make the salt water and for top off.

Oh right. Yes it's crushed coral ( i know i will change it out when i get my bigger tank) and i'm using tap water. don't really know where to get RO/DI water. Turbo snails are pretty good at cleaning that stuff up no?

CC traps lots of crud and turns them into food for algae. Sooner the better.
RO/DI water you'll have to make your own with a filter, I guess most people in NY drinks tap water not the bottle water like in west coast.

Some snails will eat that stuff but you still have to clean it, unless you like the look of a map after they trek thru some but not all of the algae:lol:.

You didn't mention the size of the tank? 15 pounds of rocks is like two to three pieces and you have a tang too? you need more bio filter material(more rocks) in order to achieve a equilibrium within the tank.

You just said it yourself. your using regular tap water. which is full of crap for lack of better words. which promote algae breakouts. tell me you at least use like aquasafe or something like that. there are so many phosphates and silicates in regular tap water. this is why u have algae. somethings you can do to hinder it for the most part is get a good cleanup crew.
- turbo snails (clean ur glass)
- Nas. snails (stir Your Sand)
- reef hermits. (clean ur live rock)
- Depending on size of tank def. take CALI REEFS rec. on the live rock its always beneficial to have more than you need of it. 1.5lbs per gallon. def. worth every single penny.
Depending on bio load already if its not to much
- Sand sifting goby
- Mag Float
- Big A$$ Skimmer. U can get a remora pro HOT for under 200.00. this will take care of your dissolved organics and stuff like that. that can be feeding some of the algae
- RODI unit. filter the crap out of the water. LOLZ Lots of pollutants in drinking water.

i think i forgot something but last but not least is lower your lighting to like an 1 - 2 hours less a day. this will also help ya out alittle.

hopefully this helps. :smokin: :yeah:
