seems like a harmless sponge, but want some opinions. I see these here and there, on the underside of 1 rock.

I have loads of those that grow in my sump.

they dont like light and they usually open up at night they are fine and a sing that your tank is maturing at a healty rate.

Any issue with toxins being released if these die? I find them in my overflow often.

They're quite common and usually multiple pretty fast, even if you're conditions aren't the best. Do a search for Q-Tip sponge and you'll find more people have them. As for them release any toxins if they die, I never had a problem with them.
