I like external overflows because I don't like internal overflows.

the tanks at petland are not reef ready. Aaron tried to get one drilled, they had no clue how to do this. then he called the tank maker and they said they would drill the holes but only within 6" of where he specified :headache:

To me they have their advantages and disadvantages.

Disadvantage
Can be louder because they aren't surround by water so their noise isn't dampened as much. Can be fixed by wraping pipe in insulation (like I did) or having two drains to run a siphon.

Advantages
Looks nice. Doesn't take up room inside the tank.
I don't like holes on the bottom of tanks.
Can have long weirs so water is drawn off more of the surface.
