hmmmm, bad salt bleached encrusting corals?

well, did a small 5g water change using a bag of reef crystals... and next day.. bam!!!!! bleached all my monti caps, sunset monti, pokiman monti, superman monti, green monti cap, red monti cap:irked:

sucks... salt level was fine... didnt really check anything else yet.. but whats the "usual" cause of these? these have been in my tank for 2 yrs now,,, how annoying.... all other corals seem fine....

Sounds like a temp issue.

That would be my first guess.

Was the salt throughly mixed?

the salt was mixed well.. and temp was 75, been like that for a while now.. so strange.. i will test and see if there are any major changes:irked:

Have you been doing regular water changes and did you change the carbon at the same time as the WC? Sounds like it could be shock from increased light intensity that can happen with a WC carbon change combo if the system isn't used to it.

mix a new batch of RC again and check the alk....it happened to me a few years ago.... a bad bucket of IO, the alk was way high causing all my montis and some acros to bleach out.....most recovered, it took months, but some never did...

will do, sounds like a plan.. not much we can do about a bad batch though as far as io is concerned, correct?


as far as the carbon, it wasn't touched... its so strange... i always get the buckets, but they ran out... so i got a smaller bag of reef crystals...

5g doesn't sound like much.... how big is your tank? i have heard of inconsistent results with IO/RC salts but that is usually with a batch. is this a new bag of salt?

i know that if the salt is not totally dissolved and you get remnants of the mix on your corals, it can cause bleaching

you should really have the salt+water running for a few days before you put it in the water w/ an airstone or powerhead or filter, sounds like the excessive salt probably landed on the coral. set up a bucket or a plastic rubbermade.

i have followed all those steps guys.. i still didnt test.... but i agree w all of you.. maybe i put it in too fast... the tank is a 40 g frag tank basically... hated looosing my sps.. ugh...
'i have more in my main tank... hopefully i can test tom and see what the results are
