Okay Steve,
Now I see your pics.
Nice stuff! Sorry I could not help with the ID's, you'll need a real SPS reefer to chime in.

Put me on the frag wait list please

Rich

Those sps came from jevsek, who was moving back home, and sold off his corals about a week ago. I got a nice Blasto Merleti and M Danae from him.

The top coral is an Acanthastrea Echinata but you can check it out on this site. I don't think it's fully open in the picture. I got the another Acan and passed on the one you that one, because of the size.

Hey, on that link it says the Lords are sometimes common......what's with all that "rare" stuff and big prices? It's only a matter of time before all these rare hyped up corals become common and lose value. Sell em while they're hot ;)

Yes that true they're common and eventually the market will be flooded and the price will go down. The Acan Lords are the ones that are really in demand but in time they'll come down in price too.

You see the word "rare" alot but that doesn't mean it rare where there is only a few. It may not be collected alot at the time or only a few have shown up in the hobby. Given time both from people fragging them and them show up at LFS the prices will come down unless they're truely rare, where there are only a few, and them the price will stay up for a while. In the long run even if they're truely rare the price will come down.

I actually thought the top pic is echinophyllia and not an acan. Can anyone confirm that thought? Thanks

There is one reason that Acanthastrea Lordhowensis will remain a high priced and rare coral. That is because it is illegal to import them from Australia and Japan (where they are indigenous) into the US. Add the fact that they are extremely colorful and you have the makings of a high priced coral. No body sells them except a few people who probably have gotten them through not-so legal means.

A. echinata are becoming quite common, but they are not as beautiful as a lord. They are overpriced in my opinion and will definately come down in price.

Shaun

IF you look around on ebay and a # of on-line places you'll see more and more of them selling Lords. So they're coming in, mostly from Japan and the area around Australia. Unlike fish it's very hard to determine if a coral is restricted and Lords are very small and some actually have other corals on the same rock. Prices are starting to drop.

Granted the prices now are really high, $50-$100 per polyp, some people want $125 per/polyp!! But I still think that you will never get a lord colony (let's say 7-8 polyps) for under $100. But I really hope that I am wrong, since I would love to have more of them without breaking my wallet. Reefkeepers seem to have a herd mentality, all flocking to the "newest" coral or trend (myself included
banghead.gif
). Acans are just the recent trend. I guess it is part of the disease/compulsion.

Most of the ebay sellers are individual reefers capitalizing on the crazy.
