If the wires behind the outlets are 12 gauge, am I in the clear?

If you check the awg of the wire in all the outlets on that circuit and confirm they are all 12awg you increase the odds that there won't be a problem. What type of walls do you have in the apartment? Do you know if its sheet rock only or is it plaster and lathe? If you're planning on staying in this apartment for a while it might be worth having it done.

Please, have someone look at your wiring before you do this. If you live in a pre-war building or a building that was renovated in the 70's by one of the sub-standard contractors that did work for HPD, you probably DO NOT want to do this.

Yeah, it is a 15 amp. So is it best to remove, take it to the hardware store to match up? That may be a lot of down time without power to the tank.

My GF has been pretty good with the tank. I'm getting away with a 90 gal in a studio.

The problem is that very cheap materials were used during rehabs in the 60's and 70's. As a result, the insulation is falling apart on much home wiring. Also, in NYC we have pre-war buildings that still have the original wiring. In my building, all of the wiring up to a certain point in the ceiling is insulated with cloth and spliced (very poorly) to more "modern" wiring, that is how old it is!

One thing you do not want to mess with is electrical. You can cause a fire and the rewards do not come close to balancing out with the potential risks. Have someone check the wiring at both ends (circuit box and outlet)

Im an electrician and most home wiring is done with 12 awg... Its been code for a very long time... New homes and a good planner would use 10 awg for future loads... I wouldnt be able to tell you which way to go or what wire you have in your home so you should have someone look at it...

It's sheetrock, but the run is clear across the apartment. Way too much work. Ins't there some sort of load test?

I would try 2 heavy duty 4's rather than the dc8.. Depending on you box it could be easier than you think to run another line..

Yeah, I was thinking of doing the 2 outlet socket expansion module. I would split up the lights and everything else. But I'm still getting the occasional tripping, which of course scares the hell out of me. I put in a check valve and it works only about half the time.

Loook i own my own company out east long island, first of all house are NOT wired in 12/2 by code. there are certain rooms in a house or locations that require 12/2 wiring, lighting on the other hand can be wired in 14/2, second you can not take a 20 amp breaker and put it on 14 gauge wiring. the best thing for you to do is run a dedicated circuit back to the panel. its very simple and easy. if you do not trust your self then hire a electrician closer to where you are. if you want to make sure you have enough power for your equipment then run a 12/3 wire and share the neutral. BE VERY CAREFUL in that circuit box, any questions or problems contact me.

the load test you can do your self, find out how much each equipment is running as far as watts , for instance your pump 20watts mh 450 watts. then what you do is take the total number of watts and divide it by 120 and that will give you how many amps you are running and will determine what to run as far as power to your equipment.
