i have been doing alot of research on a diy led light for my tank and i cant find the info i need?????? hope some 1 can help ....

first is do i need to worry about watt per gal. i was thinking i need 3 watt per gal??????

how many whites and blues for a 150 gal tank 6 ft long?????????

for the white leds what should the color be 10000k ?????

blue color ???????

y would i need it to be a dimmer ??????

i want to build a functional light not a light for looks i dont want algae nor hurt my corals

At the current light efficacy of the newer LEDs, you can get away with 90W(100W) per 2' x 2' tank area but I would recommend you to go with at least 120W per 2' x 2'.

If you do plan on getting up to 450W total, you have quite a bit of arsenals to get multiple color temperature to provide a fuller spectrum. You may consider some 6,700K, some 10,000K, some 470nm blue, some 460nm blue and may be even more other colors. As long as their current rating are same, you can use same type of constant current drivers.

I think is easier, safer buying a premade one espicially you have no idea what your doing, if not made properly, it can be a fire hazard
 
yeah i was looking into DIY LEDs too but honestly, like bizarrecorals said, it's better off buying a premade one because LED supplies are pretty expensive in themselves if you want to get the right power out of them and if you mess up you gotta start all over again if you want to reach your goal and it'll just end up costing even more than just buying an already made LED fixture
