I have a HUGE RBTA that is killing the surrounding coral. As much as I love it and my clownfish hosting it (i do have another that he occasionally hosts too) I may need trade or sell it because its getting to big.

What is the safest/best way to dislodge from the rock?

I have heard freezing a knife and putting it against the base. (not cutting it of course)

Ice cubes work great. Don't give the BTA frostbite from the ice cube though. You want to shock and coax it off not torture it off the rock. If you take the rock with the BTA out and put it into a bucket of water you can use regular ice cubes, and if you dangle the BTA with just the head in the water so there is tension on its base and stem it comes off alot easier. It usually lets go alot easier than trying to peel it and reduces the chance of tearing.

I find that just touching my rbta on the edges with my hand (wearing gloves) is enough to cause the rbta to let go of that area, then I just work around it until it completely lets go. One recommended way is to use something thin (and not sharp) like a credit card to gently pry the foot from the rock - being careful not to damage the rbta.

frozen butter knives....several of them 'cause they warm up quick in the reef temperature and use the smooth not the serrated end..(don't laugh but i heard a guy cutting the whole stalk off and spilled its guts and stuff...killing it)... just pushing the foot right at the rock.

if you can take the rock out then it's much easier. prop the rock so it hangs upside down over a bucket with tank water in it.....letting only the mouth/arms/body submerge and the stalk in mid air....either gravity or instinct to survive will take over. it'll let go and goes to the water in few minutes time. that's how i got my 12" one off.

I hope you understand that this is a family site...Now picture the face on the parents of the kid that tells his parents what he has to do to that poor Anemone........LOL:biglaugh:

Wow, seriously though, we do some strange things to our livestock..

If you can move the rock and you are not in a hurry, use the ice in addition to placing the rock in some darkness with a spot light on one side. the Anemone will move towards the light.... Wait a minute I just did it myself. Imagine this,

"go to the light anemone, go towards the light."

Ok now I know I need some sleep.

I had success with air bubbles. I used airline tubing connected to an air pump and rub the air bubbles to the base of the anemone. It slowly lets go of the rock.
