ok so im setting up my 75 but I had dirty-detritusfull/dead sand from the guy who sold me the tank. I washed it with tap water, cant i fill my whole tank with tap then use nitrate/phosfate removers and lots of carbon and call it a day?

I am sure you are fine haha thats how i started my tank the way you did with and i only had an acquaclear 70 on mine lol but of course i had to wait until the tank cycled and matured which felt like forever but what are you planning to do with your tank. Reef?? FO?? FOWLR

if you live in ny.....most likely you have chlorinated water. i would not re-use that sand. don't use tap water with reef tank....none of the nitrate/phosphate remover nor carbon will take everything out.....if at all. you should seriously consider getting an ro/di unit. don't reef without it....:lol_large

how long ago did you set the tank up? once cycled, it does not mean it's "matured". don't try to rush things...it'll really hurt your pocket and needlessly sacrificed animals. please do more reading and research.:wink1:

+1 tomtoothdoc...no matter what media u go with, as long as u cycle it, n go slow with the process u will b fine.

Dominicano, if you have no problem waiting a month to a month an ahalf you shouldn't have a problem waiting a day or two to fill your tank with ro/di water.
As far as the sand you now have, if you have the patience to continue rinsing it until you get all the gunk out of it I see no reason why you shouldn't use it. I would!!!!!!!!

I tell you if I had the opportunity to do it over, I would not have gotten rid of my old Southdown sand.;) I dispise this ESV sand I now have in my tanks.
