Deadly fish tank accident

What a horrible accident, anyone else see this?!

from today's NY Times:

A 47-year-old man bled to death in his Manhattan apartment early yesterday after he knocked over a fish tank and cut his arm on the broken glass, the police said.

According to the police, the man, Antonio Perez, was drinking with his girlfriend and two friends about 1:30 a.m. at his apartment at 3150 Broadway in Washington Heights when he lost his balance and stumbled into his fish tank. The tank, full of fish and water, fell and shattered, and an artery in Mr. Perez's right arm was severed by broken glass, said Officer Dennis Laffin, a police spokesman. "It's a straight-up accident," Officer Laffin said.

Mr. Perez's friends called 911, and he was taken to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead, Officer Laffin said.

Note this - he only had a 10 gallon tank. Those of you keeping Nano's should be careful.

Sad happening, for sure, I can't tell you how many times I thought I was going to fall onto my tank - not from drinking tough.

I had a drunk friend in college fall into my 20 gallon fresh water tank. ass first piece of glass went straight in. he needed about 20 stitches to close up the wound.

it may be more commmon than we think.

i guess we shouldnt drink and fish.
the truth is, a drunk person falling on a glass coffee table or glass window, would have the same effect. so our fish tanks are not any more dangerous than anything else. it is sad though, his friends must not be able to believe that having a few drinks cost him his life.

When I was much younger I was having a party at my house when someone knocked over my 20 gallon tank. It was an African Cichlid tank and I actually had an extra 20 gallon laying around within a half hour the tank was set back up again and no one got hurt not even the fish.

It?s amazing how quickly you can sober up.

i wonder why they took him to st lukes, i happen to work in the area as an emt, 175 and broadway very close to this persons address. with a serious injury, i.e. major arterial bleed or uncontrolable bleeding, he should've been taken to harlem hospital not lukes....lukes is too far, harlem hospital is a skip away on the harlem drive. maybe even columbia presbyterian on 168 st, although it's the closest hospital it's not a trauma center, but may have been able to handle something like an arterial bleed. sad, even a tourniquet may have saved him depending on where the bleed was in the arm.

I used to be an EMT too (expired in April). New Years is often a very busy night in the ER. Could be Harlem Hospital was all backed up and were diverting to other hospitals.
