Do i need a new light?

This afternoon as i was cleaning my tank i accidentally dropped my coralife reef tank light into the tank. Actually the legs broke. its the same one as in the pic. Well eveything was fine i waited an hour, krazy glued the legs back together and mounted it back on. After 2 minutes of being plugged in the light started smoking and the flourescent light doesnt work. Now my question is if i let it dry will it be safe back to plug in or do i have to buy a new bulb, or a whole new light? well thanks in advance

i wouldn't have turned it on until you made sure everything was completely dry. especially where the bulbs connect.

this happen to me a few years ago.
what i personally did was literally dismantle the whole thing with a dust off can and a fan

insure nothing is trapping water that can possibly corrode and cause damage in the future


do i know if this is safe, not really. this is just my experience.

maybe someone else can chime in.

As of right now since you shorted it out yes you should get a new light.

Hey thanks for the responses, i also dismantled the light and it seems that only the actinic light is the one that fumes i switched the ballast and it sill fumes, i think the connector has some corrosion causing the light to fume. not exactly sure. The other bulb is working fine and i connected it to the ballast that fumes (thinking the fume was because of the actinic light) but it also fumes and sparks. How important are those actinic lights?

if anything is still fuming or sparks throw it out or order replacement parts. that light is dangerous.

You probably shorted it and defintealy toss it and buy a new one. Not worth burning down your house trying to save the light. And since you didn't take it apart and clean it right away more than likely the salt will corride the connections in the light soon.
