The nitrates seeem to a problem. Use some amquel plus to reduce the nitrate and then install a deep sand bed. That will keep the nitrates low. Your calcium is a lil are you dosing calc? and alk a lil low. if you reduce the calc the alk will raise up to where you would want it too.

Tanks been running for about a month I just moved from queens the long island then I had something happen to the tank (which I still have no idea )I wrote a thread on it as for test kits I use salitest I just orede a new phosphate kit and I hooked up my phosban ractor what is normal phosphate I know I wanna het it as close to 0 as possible but is that possible what's average for phos and alk I feel like alk is high

No I havnt dosed anything yet I have esv 2 parts and esv mag the only thing I have been dosing is my nitate reactor its the aquapuri one I does it 10 ml of vodka every 7 days its starting to work my nitrates were real high before almost 80 ppms now there at 20 ppm so I think its starting to work I do have to adjust the flow from it every day or 2 now so I think that means its working I'm noy sure if I should start using the 2 parts that's y I started this post just lookin for suggestions I manly have softies right now and a few torchs and froggy not much though

Actually your parameters are all acceptable except the nitrates. Which are actually on the border for corals. The Alk is fine, it should always be between 8-12 and 10 is right in the middle. The PH is fine at 8.1, I would watch it if it goes lower. In a month old tank there should be no phosphates at all. I think your tank is not done with the cycle yet which you could still see a drop in the nitrates as well as the phos. Don't worry just yet and don't overfeed your fish if you have any in there.

I happen to agree. your tank might be going through a cycle still.everything is ok except phosphate, which should be less than .03 and the trates which seem a bit high. what about your trites? did you add anything from a previous tank? live rock maybe? If you did then this maybe why your numbers are high. let the tank finish its cycle and then remedy the result.

Charlie ..your water isn't that bad for softies and LPS....your tank looks good.....just stay on top of water changes, don't over feed and rinse frozen foods and run phosban....just gotta get the trates and phos down. The mag should be around 1350 which will stabilize the cal and alk which is good anywhere between 8-13...

find out why you have nitrate or phosphate, do you have a refugium? if you don't, you should set up one, I wouldn't put any SPS in at this moment

If you're reading .1 phosphate on a Salifert kit your level is through the roof. That should be your main priority as it is the most harmful to your inhabitants. Your alk is fine @ 10DKH and 20ppm nitrates will not harm anything as long as phosphates are in check. I would still get the no3 level lower with many future water changes.

Hypothetically speaking (IMO) Nitrates aren't harmful at all, but phosphates and nitrates are present together at correlated levels. This is why you see a tank like Calireefs with nitrates of 80ppm yet he has a bunch of colorful acros.... because he runs 5 pounds of GFO and keeps his po4 relatively low. :)

Charlie your tank is young. Until your po4 and no3 is where you want it, I wouldn't even begin stocking. My corrective measures would be to replace GFO and do at least a 30gal water change. There is no reason why a tank can't be low nutrient from the start. If you have nutrient problems in the future you will have to up the water changes, upgrade skimmer, add fuge etc.... you will need to improve waste export.

Thanks jackson bro how often should I change my phosban plus I have only been using half of the small container off it I was told not to use the full jar it will bleach my coral and kill them

I always used a 150g jar in my old tank with no problems. I actually never experienced problems with GFO except for maybe lightening up acro colors. I wouldn't depend on the GFO to keep the po4 level low but it's nice to have it in there to be SURE po4 is low.... Does that make sense? If you're worried about using too much I would run the same amount you're using now and change it weekly (it does exhaust that fast IME).

See I changed it last week I wasn't sure how long before it exhausted good that u told me it exhausts fast ill change it again tonight when I get home and I'm also gonna check my r/o units to make sure I don't have any from there and ill check for nitrate

have you tested for copper? has all the rocks been bought new or from your old setup? How many snails is in the tank and are they staying alive? buy some peppermint shrimp and see if they stay alive too.

I would wait a while before adding a bunch of SPS, start with softies and LPS such as acans, Trachyphylliidae, and Faviidae, see how they do in a month or two.

What is the "nitate" reactor?

As for dosing volka, I think you need to do it daily to keep the bacteria going, every 7 days sounds too far a part to sustain a good colony. Did you use some kind of bacteria additive like Brightwell or prodibio? You need to introduce good bacteria in a new system, these product seems to do a good job at that.

I'd not be upset. Your nitrates are a little up there, as is your PO4, but nowhere near OMG levels. Your mag's good, as is your Ca and Alk. I'd run phosban or another similar product, add on a fuge with chaeto if you don't have one already, and I personally like using carbon supplementation to take down the nitrates and phosphates even more. You might also like using something like purigen or another nitogen-compound-trapping resin.

If you don't dose regularly, you're just more likely to cause a bacterial bloom when you do dose, which can lower the oxygen levels while spiking the CO2 levels, causing a tank crash. However, he says he's using a reactor, which may operate differently from simple vodka dosing; I'm not sure as I simply don't know.

Despite misinformation from additive fanatics, bacteria reproduce quickly and it's practically impossible to eliminate the common nitrogen-fixing strains from a tank without deliberate intervention with things like bleach, boiling, or megadoses of several different types of antibiotics. Small populations can reproduce extremely quickly -- remember, their reproduction rate when not limited by wastes or limited food is geometric -- once the conditions in the tank change to favor them.

Think about it. You can put nothing in a tank but artificial live rock, dead sand, and some sorta nitrogen source, and a few weeks later you have sufficient populations of ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite reducing bacteria in your tank to handle a bioload. These suckers float around in the air, they're so common. When you add your first piece of real live rock or few cups of live sand, you get even broader populations of bacteria. Yes, you might get an advantage in cycling time by dosing bacteria at the beginning, but once your tank is established it just strikes me as a waste of money.

As for the vodka dosing I don't dose the tank directly I does the reactor its a aquapuri reactor the directions say does every 5 to 7 days they have dropped my nitrate from 80 to 20 ppms I've never had a phosphate problem before all the sand and live rock was moved from old tank to new tank within a few hours. I really I wouldn't think my tank would cycle I could be wrong though my question is should I start adding 2 parts esv or wait till may alk and calcuim start to drop alittle
