Frag tank question

I am going to set up a 50 long frag tank non reef ready for poly's and zoa's only. No sand or live rock. Just egg crate. I was going to use a hang on filter. Do I need a skimmer? There will be no fish. Only a few snails for algae control. Or am I just better off going with a reef ready?

No live rock? Will a HOB suffice?

you can always break the live rock to make it fit, you might get a better success rate with the rocks.
