I was just reading a report of a guy who was infected with a bacteria that was originally isolated in a damsel. Within 36 hours of getting a fin puncture, he lost his arm. Yup, the whole thing.

That article is from the Journal of Infectious Disease and it is from 1986. The man punctured his finger at 1:00pm and did not go to the doctor until the following morning. The pathogen is "Vibrio damsela", a bacteria that is well known to inhabit damsels. Damsels that carry the bacteria often look diseased and have skin ulcers. So if you have healthy looking fish, you have nothing to worry about from this.

This is not to say that gloves aren't a good idea - I just don't want to see a panic started!
