DIY LED Fixture

Hey I'm just wondering if any MR members built a LED fixture without using them big heatsinks?

I built a red LED flashlight without using a heatsink, if that counts.

well idk if it counts. I want to build a fixture maybe 24 by 24, but I dont want to use a heatsink.

You could do that if you wanted to replace the bulbs every couple of months.

I have 13 3w Cree LEDs over my 30g for fish only. I mounted them onto square aluminum tubing from Home Depot, hollow center. However I have 2 120mm (Panaflo) fans on top of the tubing removing any heat buildup. Been about 6 months now, working out well. A more denser setup I would've went with a heatsink.

ok got you. I went to home depot. I was going to buy those, but it seem too thin for me.

You mean the actually LEDS right? yes you want to keep the junction temparture as close to 20 degress C as possible. Dont forget the cooler they run the more light you get.

Just walked by the tank and checked. it's 1"x1" square aluminum tube...

o ok. I was looking for something like that at home depot. But I only seen the really thin kind that bends. I wonder do they have square plates like that?
