34 gal. Solana. I run Sponge in overflow /& Middle compartment-Sponge, Purigen & Chemi elite. Tunze 9002 skimmer
I change 5 gal. every week. Alot Right.
But two weeks ago I found 4 old sponges in the overflow caked with crap. So even doing 5 a week I could tell the nitrates were high. Nothing ever looked happy. ( i do not test) send me to jail I know! but to tell you the truth if I did test, and knew how high my trates were despite it. I probably would have packed it in.
I would have never thought that these sponges were stuck in the overflow if the tank level did not raise to the point that I knew something must have been restricting the overflow. I am quite sure I would have gone crazy looking for the problem & not found it.
At this point I will probably decrease the amount of water changes to 5 gal. every two weeks
P.S.
I am the third owner of this tank & the sponges were in the overflow when I first set it up.
Livestock. A couple of corals, 2 fish, 10 hermits, 10-15 snails..
