Can the water that's been filtered out of a RO unit be used for freshwater tanks? Or are the impurities so concentrated that it would kill the FW fish? How about mixing the excess water with tap water? Or how about using the excess water on hardwater species, like African Rift Lake cichlids?

I wouldnt do anything with it if I were you. I dont know if it would kill the freshwater fish, but it cant be a good thing for their health... it would be about the same if your drinking in a smokey bar all the time... it wont make you any healthier.

oh wait... thats what I do. crap! :D

I wouldn't use it in FW tanks. At least on a TDS basis, it's very concentrated. Use the waste water anywhere clean water isn't necessary: laundry, mopping floors, flushing toilets, soaking dishes, watering plants, etc.

i too use it for my washing machine. you can also use it to water your garden, mop your floors, take a bath, pour on your neighbor's steps in below freezing temperatures to ice them up...
