Hi everyone...I was wondering what I could use to make a stand, I know obviously I would have to use wood but can I use 2X4s to make a stand for a 20 gallon fish tank? Please let me know, thanks Fortunato
Yeah, 2x4 are great for that. 2x3 will work too, but IMO 2x4's are easier to work with and usually it's harder to get not twisted 2x3s. Even plywood alone is gonna hold the tank, but you have to have some carpenter's knowledge to build a cabinet out of plywood. Other method people use is to buy a metal stand and skin it with plywood.
ok thanks guys...and yeah I don't think it would be all that much cheaper all I need are 4 8foot 2X4s which are around 5 bucks each and yeah it would be easier to buy one I guess but I want it to fit in a specifc spot and I want it to be 3 feet tall so that's why I want to build it on my own
Buy one that's already built and just pickup one single 2 x 3 and raise the 'store bought' stand up to your desired 36" height. You can skin the 2 x 3's with some lauan or plywood and then throw some trim on it to look finished. Paint or stain to match the rest of the stand.......or, just buy the 'store bought' stand unfinished and you can finish the whole stand yourself. Done!
