my R/O unit's first chamber has been turning brown rather quickly. I have been contemplating adding a new chamber to it or a double. I am not sure which to do. my tds rating when up to 2 after i noticed the 1st chamber turning brown. i thought that it was unusual after only making about 60 gallions.

My question is if i add 1 or 2 new chambers what should i put in them? what do you suggest? i have the standard carbon chamber, dionizer, and sediment chamber with the membrane on top. If by doing these additional chambers should i get a booster pump to go along with it?

thanks matt

Your tap water may be pretty bad. If your filter is turning brown it sounds like rust.
You can always pick up new filters at Home Depot and change them out regularly. (Or order enough online to last you a few months) My tap water is pretty high in rust as well due to the old water main as well as old plumbing in my building.

ALL membranes need to be washed off or flushed. AQUA-SAFE has a simple turn the knob flush device. Most of the others have a complex procedure, which means customers do not do it. If the membranes are not flushed they tend to clog and die.

Life expectance is a result of TLC. If you flush the membrane every couple of weeks for 10-15 minutes (i.e. turn the knob) and change out the pre-filters every 600 gallons of product water, the membrane will last 5 years +/-. If chlorine or other killer chemicals get to the membrane, or if you have really turbid water (more than 1 NTU), then the membranes will fail sooner...as early as a year with high use and no TLC

Matt... I would add a whole house filter if you could. I did that in my house in SI and dramaticly improved my water
think about it showering in that water cooking and washing..
I would add a sediment and a carbon in series treat all the water comming in I replace mine every three months
100.00 investment in lowes

i whould add it just before the ro and that whould be a prefilter,im going to call ed at aquasafe on tuesday and ask him a few ???? on what to do with this,i dont think brown stuff is rust couse i see brown stuff in every stage of the filter setup, i even open up a membrame (not my)and it was loaded with brown stuff ,i have onther filter just one stage for my fresh water tank and that dosent get any brown stuff,i have notice that over time when not runing much water thur the filter brown stuff starts to show up,im starting to think thats its a bacteria growing in the filter when water is still for a long time

also would you add the sediment and the carbon bfore the r/o unit that i have??
I'd add it right after the main comming into the house this way it will filter all the water entering the house

What is really scary is that NYC has some of the best water in the country! Yikes!

BTW: I now need to figure out how to flush my membrane. Never did it before, although this is a very new fixture. (So far I have used it to filter less than 60 gallons of water)

the clear is a 5 micron sediment filter and in the white canister is a carbon filter.
I replace them 3-5 months I usuaually eyeball the clear and determine if it should be changed. they do come with a timer that goes off every three months.
if you buy them at lowes you'll get them clear. the unit I think was $59.00
cartigages are extra. they have an assortment
I think the sediment was 20.00 and the carbon was 39.00
