Matching pump with skimmer

When a pump is recommended for use with a skimmer, is GPH the only thing to consider. In other words, if my skimmer's recommended pump is rated at 1000 GPH can I substitute any 1000 GPH pump since the original was not modded in any way? - just curious. Also the pump would be next to the skimmer so head height isn't an issue (right?).

depends on what you are talking about. if you are talking about a pump to feed a recirculating skimmer then yeah, anything that will push the right amount of water will work.

if you are talking about the pump that actually runs the skimmer you can use any skimmer pump (normally has a needlewheel and a venturi) so long as you can make it fit (which is often tougher than you might think)
