So the solution to the destruction of the reefs is to open them up for commercial collection??

While this initially seemed like the worst idea I've ever heard, the idea (with some major changes in purpose and execution) could have some merit.
The idea of opening up restricted corals and fish to hobbyists "because they're all gonna die" is just a bad idea. However, I think controlled collection by specific institutions in order to propagate and preserve could be a wise idea. In areas that will be hit by this oil slick, a massive harvest might not be a bad idea. If done properly, they could be used once the area is cleared to re-propagate and seed the reef.
It shouldn't be opened up to hobbyists and the commercial markets. If anything SOME should be transported to science facilities dedicated to Marine Research.
We have well respected members of our reefing community making positive, proactive recommendations to attempt a rescue effort to save hundreds of thousands of acres of coral reefs. Making a negative statement that offers no insight, valuable information or suggestions doesn't make sense or add to a valuable conversation. If you have an alternative approach to accomplish a positive result in the tragedy in the Gulf please offer it.

i have the best idea to stop the leak. We should perform operation top kill pt 2. This would consist of us taking all the bp exec's and shooting them down 5000 feet to clog up the leak. I think its fool proof.
