hi just wanted to know the advantages and disadvantages of having a hob fuge

The disadvantage would be it looks bad hanging from the back but the good is nutrient export

They are too narrow to hold enough macro algea to really put a significant impact on nitrates and the lighting is not enough to prevent pH from falling when the DPTL goes off.

If the pump is in the display tank, copepods don't get obliterated on their way out of the refugium.

It's possible but debris and algae can and will get caught up in the pump or block up the strainer.Why not use the money for the HOBR and buy a 20,40 or 33 gal tank as a sump with a few dividers which you can install on your own.
