a friend of mine is debating on starting his first tank. i showed him mine years ago and he thought it was interesting. so now he is really thinking about starting one up. first it started with him wanting a 29g. then it turned into wanting a bio-cube. then it turned into a rimless tank. and now finally he made up his mind and wants a zero edge tank. he knows they are pricey and ect... what i want to know is...

what sizes do they come in?
any local pet shops carry them in stock? or better off online?
whats a good price for one? or the basic price range?
what does the set-up usually come with? just tank and special stand? or filtration too?
is a pendent the best way to go for it?
what do you think about them? do they actually do well or is it just for looks?

i cant seem to find much info anywhere. i saw ocean gallery II carries them but thats about it...

thanks guys.

the only place i have even seen one in person was out at ocean gallery. as for the other questions, you are probably better off doing a quick google search and see what vendors are offering.

regarding lighting, i dont see how you can run anything but a pendant (or maybe hang a fixture).

as far as personal opinion (and remember i have never owned one), it seems kinda gimmicky, they are pretty small (very small for the price), you will have to clean both sides of the glass, in order to work right you probably have to get the tank perfectly level, and evap is probablly killer...

Brendan usually monitor LIRA on Reef Central. He is a zero edge dealer. I saw his work at a Nerac event at Atlantis in Riverhead.

The zero edge he displayed was totally amazing. I would suggest also posting this on the LIRA reef central website to track him down.

Just as Rimless is more expensive than non rimless. Zero edge is much, much more expensive than rimless. Brendan's tank setup for display and sump were spectacular. He can custom build any size.

A while back I was looking at purchasing a zero edge tank. Since you are interested in what other owners have to say, I would suggest you Google "zero edge aquariums" to get some feedback.

If you decide the price is too high, you can look at some of the rimless tanks that are available. For me, I bought the Solana. However, there are a number of vendors and of course the custom route is always available.

For me, the big negative is the cost.

Another thing that I thought was interesting, is that the leveling is so important to make sure the water flows onto all sides.

Good luck,

see price really is not an option. my buddy is decently wealthy...lucky s.o.b. lol. but he like the "different" things. he always wants the newest and different things. thats why he likes the zero edge tanks. i cant really think of any other cool different tanks to reccomend to him.

bio cubes to him are too simple, solara tanks to him look advance but still basic in his eyes. rimless are nice and thats his second choice right now, but since zero edge is so interesting....thats why he wants it...because its different.

any other tanks u guys think that could fall into that catigory? just so i can reccomend them to him...im showing him the red sea tanks tomorrow... and the aga wave.

You also have other tanks, such as tanks in a bathroom toilet and others that would be put in a living room in a coffee table. This is where you view the tank from the top of the tank, and the equipment is hidden.

There is probably an endless way to hide tanks in walls, furniture, floors, etc.

After you do the research, you will find that while there are positives about zero edge tanks, there are also negatives.

Good luck,

Yeah I have seen the coffee table tanks and all those. ehhhh I think that would be better off freshwater. And he does not want anything in the wall seeing its an appartment.

Jon that sounds awesome! I looked in old threads and tried a search for that but no results. But crazy weird things like that is what he is looking for

I actually own a Zero Edge. I purchased it through a vendor through this site. If you're looking for a small tank, it's great. I hear "cool" alot from guests. Personally, I'd prefer a larger tank, since I don't have the space, I'd prefer this over the Biocube. The footprint is a little large for such a small tank, I think it holds somewhere in the vicinity of 29 gallons (maybe more with the sump).

So the cons? Because of the increased surface area, the water evaporates very quickly, unless you're home often, especially in the winter, a ATO is almost a must. I forgot to top it off one time and came home to the smell of plastic. Apparently the water level in the sump evaporated below the heater which burned a whole in my two week old Mag 9.

The front and sides need to cleaned often, inside AND OUT, doubling your work. With cleans panels, it looks like a giant ice cube, kinda like that 3D Sumsung commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjV9p3eRABQ).

It's acrylic, so scratches easily.
