How many of you dose iodide? i find the iodide test kits to be a real pain, so i dont really test for it. I just add about 20mL of Reef Iodide once a month as i figure it is better to at least add some rather than none at all. this is severly underdosed (that is the amount seachem suggests to dose biweekly) so i know i am at least not going over safe paramaters.

What does Iodine supposed to do anyway? I add it once in a blue (min suggested dosage) out of boredom but I can't see a difference in anything.

I put the "whenever" option just for that!

i am not quite sure, but i think it is an important element (probably somewhere in the level of importance of Strontium). Not sure if it is more for the the corals, or the inverts, or both.
dont know if you dont see a difference because the little you add is insignificant - compared to regular dosing. Or perhaps it is more of a health issue that you wouldnt necessarily "see".
dont the shrimp use it when molting to form their new shell?

well if there is gonna be a place to really discover what iodide is all about in our reefs, this may as well be the place as it seems it is not very well understood. These "advanced" threads seem to be attracting an audience as of late.

i dose 2 drops kent's lugols every 2 weeks
dont know what this is about, but it was posted on the Reef Iodide? FAQ (on Seachem's site).
Reef Iodide? SupportQ: Is Reef Iodide , potassium iodide? Is this the same as lugols solution. I have heard very bad things about Lugols and great things about potassium iodide.
A: Reef Iodide uses potassium iodide. It is not Lugols or a lugols like solution.

I test for Iodine w/ my Salifert kit. It has two tests you can do- Iodate and Iodide (I think those are the names- I'm at work and can't check). My Iodate is spot on, but my Iodide is way low. :scratchch whats that mean?

I add Kent two part Nano for Ca and Alk once a week (or more)- it contains a bunch of those trace elements and Iodine for Nanos where the those trace elements can get depleted pretty quickly. Seems to work fine so far!

Once again, ty for the correction but there are far too many posts to spell check on this site. You're better off spending the time on more productive things.

I voted "whenever"

Seems to be too much uncertainty, this is why I always avoided dosing iodine regularly.

Hey,

Just to clarify, I dose one half the recommmended dose, once per week. That is my personal underdose.

I have heard that iodide will help with soft coral growth and color. It is also said that shrimps use it when molting. But on the flip side, a counterargument to that is that the iodide is actually forcing the shrimps to molt prematurely. Other than that I haven't looked too far into it.

well according to Dr. Foster and Smith.....iodine for corals are suppose to "helps heal damage due to excessive light exposure" and for crustaceans and other marine inverts its suppose to be "a component of the animal's exoskeleton; aids in the molting process" Personally i add half a mL a day, which is roughing 8 drops of kent's concentrated iodine

when i add iodine once during the month, my cleaner shrimp tends to molt 1-2 days later.
