the scratching isn't from the magnet...it's from anything caught between the acrylic and the magnet (inside or outside), so best to get a floating magnet, and keep away from sand/shells.
How big/tall is the tank, with 3/4" acrylic?

Rare earth mags, my vote.. and as Albano said watch the bottom as it only takes one grain of sand..

I now all too well the dangers of sand and a magnet!!!! I'm looking for a quality magnet made for acrylic. Thanks!

bar none best out there ona side note, the mag float is decen ttoo but the 2 i have tried made feel like i as going to pull the tank of the stand as the magnets are super strong, btw i have an acrylic tank and always use the mesh bag on the inside part of the magnet to kepe an little particals from getting stuck inbetween the bristles
