As far as Akl, I have reef carbonate for akalinity. Will this work to raise it?

Before you raise it, you have to be certain what level it's at now. Did you mean 2.2 ALK yesterday or 220?

I also changed a dual actinic bulb to replace a burned out one. The Xenia began to close after the new bulb was installed. I read something about light shock on

sure will. it will also raise your pH, so dont put too much at once.

could also be the light, but actinics are really not that strong, dont know if they would shock the xenia.

Deanos - I am using Mardels test strips. The akl goes increments of about 100 to 280. How do I convert that into meq/L?

Also, my button polyps rarely open. But everything else is wide open. Maybe this is a sign of something.

220 come to about 4.4 meq/L. You dont need to add any more alk.

Solving Calcium and Alkalinity Problems

According to Mardels test strips:
ph = 8.2
ammonia = 0
nitrite = 0
nitrate 20ppm
alk = 220
calcium - 400
I do top of daily with r/o water - about 2/3's gallon. Perhaps my alk is low. They are not near other corals. I'm removing the bioballs.

here's my 2 cents....
I dont trust test strips humidity and age factor into the readings.
my PH is 7.9 at nite and 8.1 -8.2 during the day and my zenia pumps and grows like a weed. your really dont have to does Iodine if you perform normal water changes. I wish my angels would eat somer og my zenia it grows so much.

get your water tested with real test kits not those strips. go from there.
is any of your fish nipping at them that will stop them form pulsing also
