External Pumps... Question.

For thoose of you that are running external pumps, have you noticed any increase in water temp? I have noticed a + 2* rise in water temp. With more evap ocurring. Is this increase with all external pumps or just the bigger models like the Blueline 100HD and the such.

Unless you are restricting the flow, or you have a bad impeller you really should not see a temp increase, blueline 100 is a very strong pump. I think it's like 1900gph at 0' head

Just saw your pics of your frag set up, your temps might be due to the extra lighting you added. and also the bigger skimmer.

Some pumps are worse than others, of the pumps I've used I find the pressure rated pumps like Mag or Gen-X to add some heat vs ReeFlo that run very cool.

I totally agree that they increase water temp. I'd noticed this when I switched 2 of my tanks over from internal Mag Drive pumps and think it is due to the larger physical size of the pump as the water is inside of it a hair longer and the internal pumps are running cooler due to being submerged.
I run Iwaki's.
The evaporation ..I can't say I noticed that but it doesn't mean that didn't happen as well.

I think it has more to do with the amount of energy. External pumps tend to be larger and use more energy.

But if you compare two pumps that use the same amount of electricity. An internal pump and an external fan cooled pump compared with the same amount of electricity going to both...the external will heat the water less.

The blueline 100HD is a monster pump but on a large tank you probably wouldn't notice much of a temp increase.

All pumps will heat the water to a certain extent. Keeping the air cooled external pumps in a well ventilated area will help more heat exchange through air vs. your tank water.

Submersible pumps transfer all the heat to your water but they often use less energy. Less energy = less heat.

Every external pump that I have used in the past 20 years have added exactly 2 degrees for each pump including the reputable Eheim 1260 pumps run externally on my skimmers.
I can shut down my Reeflo Dart for a day and see the avg temp drop by 2 degrees, I can shut down my skimmer that has two Eheim pumps and see the same and same for my Blue Line and Panworld and Gen-X pumps in other systems.

OK so it's not just me with this issue.
@ RKA... the lighting on the 40 Breeder Frag Tank are 4 T 5's so no heat is being produced that I could notice. Hmm.... restricting the flow? I do have Ball Valves connected to the bulkheads and there not fully throttled open. There at the 1PM position. So I guess that means more time in the pump. If I were to full throttle the valves I would end up picking up corals from the floor and ceiling in the house. The pump is indeed 1,900 GPH... It's a Hurricane. The skimmer is a beast compared to the old one I had on the system with virtually no heat increase. It's as if I was using a mag 7 to drive it and this one is a Sedra 9000.

@qy7400 will research on reeflo.

@KathyC.. yeah I have an Iwaki WMD 40 RLXT but it is only a recirculation pump and I had an issue with backpressure once I added the frag tank. So I had to upgrade.

@ WES.. yes i agree with the energy effect. Hmmm gave me an idea as far as ventilation. Thanks!

@ Pecan... guess there's pro's and cons to running external pumps.

I think the difference is that you went from a smaller external to a larger one so yes more heat, and that pump is an animal... But you know that I just went from my Mag12 to a panworld pxx 100 and my tank is cooler by about 2 degrees and when I put my AC on hellyeah it just got cold that I had to add a heater...
But Ive noticed alot of evap on my system and I just dont really get that...

I have a Reeflo Hammerhead pump on my set up and I don't feel like it produces any heat, but I do have an AC hooked up to my AC3 in my basement to keep the tank cool so maybe that's why I don't notice. Either way I think running an external pump definitely helps keep the tank cooler because the heat that a submerged pump makes gets absorbed directly by the water
