If EcoRay 60 can do, i'm sure Acan Lighting can, because they are higher-end LEDs. Though, PAR levels on EcoRay seem higher, Acan Lighting can control time and dim. Not sure if this is gonig to help much, but that's all i know

yea, I'm figuring its going to be about $6000 for my tank its 9 ft long
sounds CHEAP...you may need more units to cover a tank 36" wide (front to back)...Most fixtures are made for tanks 18"-24" wide...You might need to go with five or six 30"-36" units, running front to back
my tank is 40" wide and required 2 rows of LED fixtures for coverage...and... I still ended up, adding 10 48" T5s.

The A103 still will not cover 36" front to back. They changed the center row focal optics from 50 degrees to 75 degrees but I believe the outer rows are still 50 degrees. You would need to raise the lights up to a point where it will look unsightly and in the interim, loose intensity overall.
Probably figure 3' fixtures x 6 @ $675 per foot = $12,150
There is no cost efficient way to light up your tank with controllable LEDs IMO

I'm curious were you guys are getting the prices for these acan lights. Ocean Galler 2 has the 36" lights for 1200.00 apiece. So 6 times 1200.00 would be 7200.00 not 12,000. And if you are spending that kind of money on 6 units I'm sure any store would work on the price.

The lights can grow SPS without any problems, if you look in the gallery on the acan website you will see plenty of pics of James tanks with these lights on them. There is also a good review from Dr. Sanjay Joshi as well, http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2010/2/aafeature2

running parallel to the tank I would not go more than 24" front to back, anything greater and your looking at 2 rows or running the lights perpendicular. The A102 will reach 30" deep so you're fine at 24".

Felix how wide is your tank, he's looking at 108 x 36 so the lights would have to be very high up or 2 rows/perpendicular to light the tank.

jaa the prices are from Acans website, they list them now at 675 per foot for the A102/A103. Did you notice if the lamps were the A101 or A102, the A101 are 395 per foot,

You are probably better off with modular lamps but I don't personally feel that the 14.5" Pacific Sun Cree units will give you the 36" coverage without raising the lamps also. The modular would have to be hung/mounted perpendicular to the front pane, but still better then running 2 rows of parallel lighting.
So if this was my 9'x3'x2' tank, I would probably get 1 master 3w Cree unit and 4 3w Cree slave units at about $1300x1+$1100x4=$5700

ok now im really confused, can these pacific sun units cover the range of a 36inch wide tank? also i know that pacific sun is using cree bulbs but whats acan lighting using? they said on there website something like cree xp so that tells me there not using cree bulbs.

Crazy...If at all possible, make the tank as wide (front to back) as possible, even at the cost of making it less than 9'. Much better to have the additional room to landscape...my glass cages tank is 96" X 40" X 27"h...if I had the room I would've made it 60" front to back, OR BIGGER!

LEDs raw (without focal lenses) have a natural dispersion of anywhere from 100 to 120 degrees so that being said, yes it will cover 36" from a fixture mounted perpendicular. Having light in the front and back is different from lighting the front and back for optimal coral growth though.
In a nutshell: in a perfect world where funds are not limited, the ideal scenerio is to run dual strips of Acan's A103 or double rows of Pacific Sun 3w Cree units with optional 60 degree focal lenses placed parallel to the front pane for a 36" + deep tank.

Alfie,
I met Jim on Friday. He mentioned your tank at the dealership back in the day :)
He has a Good Memory...I think I still have some pics of those early 1980's reefs...back when a full 50+ lb. box of florida live rock COVERED with ricordeas, was $80!
BTW, Warren you're not too far to drive down here, also! Can't tell you, how many times I driven to Wallingford, TWICE in a day to pick up cars!

thanks albano. tank looks great! i think im leaning towards pacific sun due to i feel that the spread would be better then the acan lighting, is this a correct statement?
