i been using this item for 6 months should i start using vodka dosing
Poseidon X-Series DeNitrators are a highly efficient Nitrate Removal Filtration system designed to remove Nitrates from the aquarium using anaerobic denitrification. These filters can be used in all Freshwater (including Planted Aquariums) as well as Saltwater Aquariums (especially Reef Systems). You are bidding on a Poseidon X-3 DeNitrator that is rated for tanks 150-300 gallons.
Nitrates in the aquarium can be controlled by frequent water changing, along with limiting the biological load and excessive feedings. A well vented wet dry filtration system will detoxify ammonia before breaking down into nitrate. Utilizing chemical filtration, and protein skimming will also limit nitrate levels.

The X-series DeNitrators utilize highly porous media that build up large surface areas of anaerobic bacteria that eat up nitrates from the system. The dark enclosure of the canister blocks indirect light from entering the chamber, causing algae problems to interfere with the denitrifying bacteria.

There are no feedings necessary to the media. Certain DeNitrators utilize dangerous methanol feedings to boost the levels of anaerobic bacteria. This can have an adverse effect by increasing the levels of harmful aerobic type bacteria leading to harmful pathogenetic effects as well as increase levels of phosphates and sulfates as a byproduct.

Will maintain LOW to NO Nitrate levels for many months before media exhaustion. Replace Denitrification media after nitrate levels begin fluctuating to higher than normal again.

The included pump is to be placed inside the sump feeding the aquarium water to the canisters which can be placed outside the sump. The filtered water is then returned back to the sump. For those who do not have a sump, the pump must be placed inside the aquarium and the canisters can be hung beside, behind, or above the tank. Systems with a nitrate concentration in excess of 100ppm tend to have similar properties in which the rate of nitrate formation is greater than the systems natural denitrification ability. These systems are in essence "out of control" as the organic waste byproducts are being formed at a greater rate at which the filtration can remove them. If initial nitrate concentrations are in excess of 100ppm, it is recommended to do water exchanges to lower (lower 25% - 50%) the nitrates prior to installing the DeNitrator. If DeNitrator is installed with nitrate concentrations over 100ppm, it will take much longer (over 1 month) to establish the effective amounts of aenerobic bacteria to start the proper denitrification process.

Special blend worked great for me. Takes a few days to kick in. As Mike said it competes for nutrients in the tank...that's why it takes a little while. Just be sure you either open the windows or have you tank top somehow closed because the smell is extremely unpleasant...
