i was thinking of putting a heater on my new 500 gallon system...anyone know what size i would need and who makes it....i might have to put two from what i bin reading ....if anyone has any good idea's let me know...thank you brian

I have 2 finex 500w heaters. The only thing I don't like is the temp is set @ 81 from the factory, so everytime the power goes out the heaters reset to 81.

I believe you will need more than 2 500w heaters. Finnex 500w heaters are rated up to 125 gallons, They make a 800w that is rated up 250 gallons, maybe 2 of those will get you by. No MH bulbs to give off any heat and with a large sump you might need a 3rd smaller heater.

I should have specified. I have over 400 gal. system and the sump is in my unheated garage. Before upgrading my heaters the tank would drop to 74 degrees!!! Last winter it stayed at 78. I also run 1500w of metal halide. Hopes this helps.

i use a blueline controller with 2 500 wt titanium heaters .1000 watts is more than u need i run nearly 600 gallons and 400 gallons of it sits in a cold unheated basement.the only bad thing with the controller is the temperature is way off but you only set once and its good to go

I would use 3 or 4 Fluval E-series heaters. I think they are they best. They are microprocessor-controlled, have LED temperature readouts, and color indicators that tell you the status of the water temp. I think they are safer because the microprocessor is less likely to fail and over heat the tank, also with the color indicator, its easy to see whether is hotter, colder or the same temperature that the heater is set as. Also, using several smaller heaters prevents any one from doing much damage if it were to fail.
