I was doing my monthly water change when I noticed that my Brute can was warm to the touch. Turns out that the via aqua titanium heater malfunctioned and baked the water to a sizzling 101 F.

It's now cooled down to 94 F.

Can I still use this saltwater once I cool it down to about what my display tank is running at? Or is this batch "fried" chemically that is and would you start new? Problem is I already drained most of my sump out for the water change until I realized that the saltwater bin was baked.

From now on I am going to run my spare ranco as a temp controller on my Brute can and obviously throw the via aqua titanium heater in the garbage.

Input appreciated.

thanks in advance.

well my display is at 76 and I figured a 20% w/c which is what I am doing would bring the temp up to 80. Better for it to drop down to 80 degrees which would only bring it up a degree.

I probably should test the batch for Mag, Ca, and Alk but my test kits are used up so my main question is would these three and Ph change as a result of increased temp and probably not enough to make much of a difference since I'm doing a 20% w/c anyway?

If the heater didn't break and was only just stuck on, then it should be fine since the brute is food grade. If the heater was cracked, or if the temp got close to melting the plastic container, then I would make new water.

Yeah you should definitely get a controller. I didn't have a controller on my new saltwater bin but on my main system I do. I run the reefkeeper light. I'm sure the via aqua titanium heaters are fine if you run them with a controller but I personally like eheim heaters..haven't had one fail and will continue to buy them.. Unfortunately I had a visitherm on my main system and the via aqua on my water change container. Even if you have a controller the heater can crack/burst.
