In another day or two I have to break down my 65 gallon for a move into a new house in NJ. My plan is to remove all water, rock & livestock and place it into a 45 gallon bin that I bought from home depot. I will add the power heads, heater, skimmer and a pump to circulate the water. I will hang my fixture above the bin to keep the corals with light.

As for the 65 gallon and sump, I cannot move the tank filled with the sand and I do not want to disturb the sand bed and reuse it again. I am planning on taking out all the sand except for the 20 lbs of it in my sump. I will then bring the tank and sump to the house in NJ and set it all back up using whatever water was left from not filling the bin and then make new saltwater to fill the tank. I will then let the tank run for a day and get the temp to where I want it. I am not going to place any sand back into the display tank.

Once that is all set up and running at 78-80 degrees, I will come back to the house in NY and get all the rock and place it into a bin with water, bag up all of my corals and livestock and place them into a cooler with heat pads to keep them warm. I will then make my trip back to NJ and acclimate all livestock into the 65 gallon once again.

I am also doing a upgrade to a 156 gallon in the next few weeks in my new home. How long can all my livestock be ok in a tank without sand? I have to set the new tank up and let it cycle, then I will be able to remove all livestock from the 65 and move them into the 156.

Let me know if any of you have done a move before and what you have found to work the best, or even if you see something I wrote and think of a better way of doing it. Also my 65 gallon is not a well established reef meaning my corals are not spread all over my rocks. Most of my corals are on frag plugs, glued to rock rubble or just laying on my sandbed. I dont have to go tearing apart corals to remove rocks. Thank you in advance.

It sounds like a good plan.
I think leaving out the sand is an excellent idea as you will stir up all kinds of crud when you remove it. Once set up in NJ, it should be no issue to run it withput a sandbed (unless you have wrasses in there that sleep in the sand).

Do check the parameters as you could have a mini cycle. Better to check than guess. A daily ammonia test is in order :)

You will need to keep that sand from your sump as warm as you can before/during the move and get water back in there asap. I would leave enough water in there to just cover the sand if at all possible.

Congrats on the new upgrade - do be sure to let it cycle completely before you move your critters into it!
