what you are bringing up is a good point but its stretches way beyond our fish tanks if you want to really save the earth... Why dont you sell your car and get a bike, get rid of the motor on your boat and row yourself to the next dive... I can go on forever...
I believe that people can use the earths resources but its the amount that is being taken that is the problem... IMO I dont think that stopping the import or export of things will help, I think these things need to be monitered so that we dont use more than what is being produced...

You are being extreme for the sake of a point you cannot make.

I am saying there needs to be a shared use and dialog here. But I can understand how the local Hawaiian feels when they see their reefs packaged and sold off to people thousands of miles away that probably do not appreciate it.

There needs to be a "collection period" where exporters can take from the reef and then a "healing period" where we let the reef grow back. As well as limits as to what and how much can be taken

I believe I made my point, and I thnik alot of people are on the same page, well all except you... Nobody wants to kill reefs here but you are talking like you dont have a tank, your talking like there is a difference between taking a yellow fish out the water as compared to a blue fish... Stop and read some of the points that have been made on the thread...

Thank you... And this is my point...

If a law were made to prohibit fish/reef tanks, We would all be grandfathered in the law as we already have tanks (I am not a lawyer but I think this is the case)....and, if you think coral prices are high now...wait until collecting is illegal.

We would be grandfathered into what we have in our tanks now but wouldnt be able to add anything new so once our fish are gone that will be the end.

And then you will have a massive black market for them, and guess what many will buy.

Tank bred fish would become a larger industry, as would aquaculture corals....the prices will go up, so then more people will start breeding/selling, which will in turn lower prices and then less people will be breeding/selling, and the cycle will repeat until the market finds its own place (what is called the "invisible hand").....

But this is all speculation, I'm getting way ahead of things

It illegal over there for reef tanks because they say the land is sacred and if any on that live on the island take from the Island will be cursed for life and they really belive in that. I have a friend thats from there and his pops told my that.

If they were to ban the collection/possesion of reef fish then the captive fish will follow. The reason why is they wouldnt be able to police whats captive and whats not.. Trust me ive seen it with reptiles.

That is just not true....it doesn't even sound true

The law is in place so that no non-native species will get introduced into the waters. They are afraid that a newly introduced species will rapidly take over, much as the lion fish did in the Caribbean.

Fish only tanks are allowed in Hawaii, you can even collect sand/"rock rubble" for you personal tank, but not more than 1 gl and I think 1 lbs per day per person. However, there can not be any visible life on the sand/rubble you collect. Apparently all tanks there have man made rock, or so I've read

The folklore you quote is reasonably accurate, but the reason you can't have a reef tank there is because they are very serious about protecting their reefs and rock and coral harvest is prohibited. AND they are fanatical about the importation of non-native and potentially invasive species of all flora and fauna --ocean or terrestial ---and you can't bring stuff in legally.

I agree with Jaa, but all the others that chimed in have a point. Conservation first, then after numbers have recovered enough then open it back up; but with restrictions so events like this doesn't endanger the species we as humans some times over harvest, again.

I think this is only applicable to the black sands.

I guess this also means everyone needs to stop eating fish, shellfish and any other thing people eat from the ocean. I haven't had seafood in almost 25 years or so, when I learned the hard way I'm allergic.
