I am thinking of converting a 75 gallon fresh water fish tank into a salt water reef. Can I do it successfully without a sump. The tank is not reef ready so there is no over flow.
I am open to all opinions.

Thanks,
Alan

While sumps make many aspects of reef keeping more convenient, you do not need one to be successful. If you choose to go sump-less, you will have to acquire equipment that hangs off the back and design your aquascaping to accommodate equipment hanging in the display. These are not insurmountable things, and are really the main drawbacks to a sump-less system. There are many successful systems run this way.

I have a sumpless system and have quite a few things hanging off the back, skimmer , reactor, and a filter that i run carbon in, I also have a auto top off as well and a apex controller, I went with out a sump maily because it's in my living room and i did not want alot of noise i still have some but a bit less than if i was to have a return pump. I like my set up but it's only a 40 breeder and it works great but on a 75 I would go with a sump, it just makes things much better and much easyer to have a fuge as well. with a sump you will have much better choice of skimmers and reactors you can use as well plus it keep alot of crap out of the tank and in the sump, not to mention a neat place to banish various missconductiong crabs and critters.
do you need one ,, no , would it be better yes. Especially on a 75 you have alot more room in the stand and you can always drill it or have an overflow, the only real bonus of not having a sump is no fear of overflows overflowing the wrong way and you get to save some money on not having a return pump.
