Help-Power Outage

I'm at work and just found out that the power at my house is out and could be for a little while... I browsed through the sticky above and know I need to aerate the water and what not.

It also mentions over-heating water... my issue is the water temperature is going to drop... what can I do to keep it in the 70s?

I heard some wires are down in my area also so what do I do if my power is going to be out for the next 6 or 12 hours? It's already been an hour from what I hear!

Airstone generated pumps are best - we have them in our thread for emergency back up yet hardly anyone buys them.

A generator is always good to have as back up or battery back up from a PC or something like that.

Wish we could help, but we are too far away unless you want to drive to pick up hardware to help.

Fill up some tupperware or soda bottles with hot water and float them in your tank.

Thanks for the advice... hot water bottles is a good idea. I was thinking of making some RO/DI and doing water changes to keep the temp up.

LIPA updated their website and says power should be back by 5pm so hopefully everything is ok

I'm in Barnum Island and ours is back on - it had gone out twice today.

Is anyone at your house to tell you if it comes back on?

Water changes won't help as that water will cool at the same rate as your tank will No power = no heat for hot water.

I have battery powered pumps here if you need to borrow one.

get a dc/ac power invertor and run it off a car bettery ,,,thats what i did i paid 40 bucks at radio shack and ran 2 powerheads and heaters off it

That's a good point I didn't think of-- I have gas heat/hot water but others may not.

Power came back around 4pm so it was only out for about 2 hours... temperature dropped about 2 degrees but it going back up. Everything seems fine, thanks everyone!

Today is a rough day for power outages. Wind peaked over 50 mph today. Lots of trees and wire down.

Glad to hear you didn't have any casualties. Definitely get yourself a battery powered air pump though. I bought one over the summer when there were a lot of brown outs in Brooklyn ($21 at Petland :irked:. Russ and Jim have them for WAY less than that, but I didn't want to risk not having it in time). Sure is a good thing that I sucked it up and overpaid, because my power went out for a couple of hours a few days later. I popped it in and didn't lose a thing.

They also come in handy if you're moving your tank or have to transport fish for a long distance.

wierd, me too. Yesterday about 9:30am I was looking at the coral in the tank and the lights whent off, I was not surprised because today Im leaving for Puerto Rico again and what would it be with out some added stress. Well I first thought I tripped a breaker but nope the first half of my street only whent out. Yup my luck only because I have a tank, Im sure. It did go back on with in 3 hrs so no big change in temps . Ok now moving on last night I dont hear my sounds hat come up from outside so about 2am I go outside into my wet room to find the heaters are off. WTF! I go check the breaker and it tripped. I figured this might happen due to me just adding a 1000w ontop of the 3- 300w to the same circut. Its fixed now but got me to thinking of starting the design of my new 460 g system with a 1000 sft addition to incorperate it all. Below in the new basment this will be dedicated to a state of the art wet room with no expence speared.
