i had a green carpet that went on the wayside...it was in a my parents 30 gallon tank and it went by the wayside..i think they had 9 watts per gallon is it cause they didn't feed it? it was under power compacts?

many different factors could contribute to the death... its hard to say..

lights - depending if it came from a higher lite tank.
feeding - possibility if lights are not to strong a little more feeding is def. called for.
water flow - was it in a high flow area

could of also been one of the parimeters of the tank... it all depends on the coral and the tank its in...

but to seal ur doubt as long as the carpet anemone is under at least 9+ watts PC which is more preferable per gallon not to low in the tank, fed enough, and the paremeters are stable and perfect ur friend will and should not have a problem..

also carpet anemones move alot so puttin it up higher in the tank might be a problem. they also like high flow areas.... but with the 9 watts per gallon, its in a nice flow area and if your friend feeds it enough no problem there.....

see thats what i thought..power compacts don't give up to much of a good par...so it is necessary to feed them..the carpet shrunk in size....what to feed them silversides?

Gamma Foods Lancefish (a higher quality fish food than silversides)

but silversides will do..

other options u can use in a rotating cycle

Marine Snow
Phytoplan
also im not sure about this but maybe someone else could tell ya if its good or not.. brine shrimp.....

my friend wants to go BB...is this a good idea?...the tank will have live rock...

im not sure about the green carpets and bb.

BB is def. the new way of thinking in reefing.. with abundant live rock and now when i say alot of flow i mean alotttttttt. im talking adding major gph to the tank. for example i went BB and glad i did. but i had to add a tunze 6060 (1500gph) to my 29 gallon for the flow that is needed. and i think i still need more in there... lolz.. but wait for one of the more educated reefers on the site about the green carpet and BB. im not to sure...

Please have your friend read this FAQ. While there are examples of anemones, SPS and clams living under PC lighting, that does not mean it is recommended. For every success story, there are many more such failings. Also, many carpet anemones grow up to 1' in diameter; that's alot of real estate to dedicate to a light loving invert in a 50 gallon tank.
I'm not sure how a properly setup metal halide fixture is any more a fire hazard than a PC fixture, but he must have his own opinions on that matter
