many factors can judge the health of a carpet. I neverfed my carpet except for couple of fish it ate of mine, but once my clowns hosts it it never ate anything more. Also carpets like meatier foods like shrimp or sliversides. heres a pic of my carpet on the move before the ph problem

my tank dedicated for anemone only, so far i have 2 carpet with bear bottom. the carpet will move a lot if there are no sand or gravel on the botoom of your tank. so i put a piece plastic container with sand inside about 6 inches, and he stay happy in the container for 1 year already. he is getting bigger and bigger now, 12-15 inches now.
if you planning to have PC with carpet, do more feeding often, at least 2-3 times a week.
