There is nothing I’ve read to indicate aging bulbs could manipulate PO4, I believe Sanjay has even done a study on aged MH lamps and found it took almost 2 years for the bulbs to shift color. PO4 is the one test kit, opinion only, that’s a waste of money. In your case I’d say the PO4 was higher than the kit led you to believe. While you may have been at say .02 before the outbreak the increase I’d say was more to food/waste or even exhausted media.
[FONT="]Red cyano is probably the toughest, I’ve had outbreaks when PO4 is 0 on my meter and none when PO4 was at its highest of 1.4. My feeling is that once our tanks mature other good bacteria out competes the cyano and this is when we see it disappear.
Then again it's been over 25 years since my last chem class so....
