Bio Ball Question

Hey guys.. question,

I got a 27 Gallon protean 400 sump. When i purchased the sump guy told me that he had bio balls in it. The sump has a built in protean skimmer here is link http://www.superskimmer.com/Protean_400.htm

My question is, Im getting mixed answers about bio balls, but for a reef system (fish and corals) should i remove the bio balls?

Just purchased a phos reactor from Russ at salwater critters (the man) should be arriving tom.
