I am purchasing my first home and shoudl have keys in hand in the next 30 days. I currently have a 75 gallon with a 30 gallon sump and love the setup. The stand and hood are custom built out of mahogony and after carefully purchasing everythign i have to say its a good setup, not to expensive to run and fairly easy to maintain.

I have always wanted a fish room and an in wall setup. Im trying to figure otu if it makes more sense to sell my setup now for a new in wall tank with a small fish room/closet. Or is i should just make an in wall with my 75. Since i liek the existing stand i was thinking i could put that facing insode the fish room or work room. If i put the front of the tank facing the wall i can uise that stand as the in wall stand and just use some trim to cover the gap from the wall to tank. this way while in the work/fiosh room i woudl see the nice stand and back on the tank, and in the finished basement i would see the front of the tank in the wall. If i did it this way i would also be able to leaved all the equipment in the stand and save a ton of space for an actual work room.

What do you guys think?

I have seen a few 1,000 and 2,000 gallon setups that i thought were insane. My dream would be a tank that goes from floor to ceiling and about 8-10 ft wide. but i dotn think thats practical. I think a 1,000 gallon display with a small fish room would be awesome.

i think u should def wait a little while before putting up ur dream system owning a home have plenty of hidding cost and maintiance and u always want have some extra bucks for a rainy day this just my op so dont get offended not telling u what to do and congratz on been a first time home owner best of luck

I agree, wait it out a year or so and take it from there. I bought my house at 26 and I was thinking the same way and then more important things came up.

Yeah that sounds like some good advice.....One thing I just thought of....the current 75 isn't drilled, it has an hang on overflow. Since I was going to have to move the tank I was going to purchase a drilled tank. Maybe I should go for a 90 drilled, use the same stand, that way if I decide to do the in wall setup the tank will be a little higher in the wall.


Seams like a good compromise.

Imo, keep your tank just the way it is, think about what you would be gaining in by purchasing a 90 drilled? Just 15 gallons, and some height. I would just run it like the way it is for 1 year, then when you decide to upgrade use that as a sump. (very hard to convert a drilled tank into a sump. this way you would purchase once instead of twice.

if u have to break ur tank down y not just drill it ur self nice diy project to help u break in ur new home if u want a tank over 100g then a 90 wont keep u happy for too long and for 15g save ur money i say just wait it out u be alot more happy latta and u wont waste money on something temp

Realistically all these guys are right. Owning a home is a big expense and you should not go too crazy. However if you wanted I saw a guy ljsreptiles I think his name was I just saw the post a few mins ago he was selling 120's for pretty cheap you can use that on your current stand and they are drilled. gives you about 60% more water volume. 120 is a nice tall tank for more of a show tank look instead of that 75 which is so low. I would say do that so you get a nice upgrade and you can use the same setup,it definitely won't break the bank but you might need a bigger skimmer/sump depending on what you have now.

I agree with all that have stated you should wait for the same reasons. If I were you I would keep the existing tank as is upstairs. It is always nice to have a tank that is always viewable at all times.
As for the in wall tank w/fish room in the basement I would go with the largest you can comfortably afford later on when you have gotten a handle on the work, and expense in home ownership. Trust me there is always something happening in owning a home.

Also, I would take some serious consideration on the dimensions of the new tank. Think twice on the depth & height of the tank as to ease of working in and with it.
