How often to change gfo

Hey guys ,, so I started to run some gfo ,, how often r u suppose to change out the gfo ,, mine has been running for close to a month

ive been using since december 9th about half a pound of the pellet gfo and im starting to see algea growth in the tank, i have a 120 ... im guessing time for replacement

Yes it does.

How often you need to change it depends upon your system.
If you are just starting to use it to knock down a high (or higher than 'normal') phosphate level, you may want to change it weekly.

Once you get your tank down to a desirable phosphate level, you can change it less frequently.

A good clue that it is time to change it is having to clean the film off your glass on a daily basis.

For anyone just beginning to use GFO, do keep in mind that you do not want to drastically lower your phosphate level too quickly as it can affect your corals. Best to follow the directions on the jar for how much to use (as there are different brands of GFO) in a tank your size, and gradually reduce your phosphate level and then maintain that level for a healthy tank. :fish:

Oops ..forgot, one other thing to remember..

You only want the GFO to slowly tumble in the reactor, often it is only the top 1/2 to 3/4" that will 'tumble'. If the water flow through the GFO is too vigorous, it will break apart and end up all over your corals/aquascaping. You do not want that to happen!

x2 ..for first time users monitor your alk ..the GFO may effect the alk level also as mentioned too much GFO dropping the phos too quickly will cause problems....I learned the hard way on both counts....I change it out every three months now..

Before the pellets i was doing it every 2-3 weeks with greet success
