Glass holes overflow question

I currently have a HOB 1000 gph (Actual 500) overflow and was considering installing a glass holes overflow the only problem is I wouldn't be able to drain the entire tank and was wondering if it is possible to drill a tank (Glass) half full of water, what do you guys think?

I wouldn't because you'd put more stress on the glass drilling it vertically. Plus run risk of itsy bitsy shards getting in the water.

Its possible, but there's a chance you'll end up with half that water + fish/corals on the floor after the tank cracks
