When a fish has ich in your reef tank..................................
How many guys empty all their fish out of their tanks and Quarentine them for 2-3 months and leave their tanks empty for 2-3 months while all the ich dies?

Just Curious :smash:

OK for those of you who have done it or who do it ............What do you do when 1 or 2 fish have ich in a semi large tank lets say a 55-300 gallon tank with fish that are 3-12 inches long? Do you set up a 55-300 gallon QT ? Or do you choose a different method of treatment? Because it seems extreme and expensive to have a 55-300 gallon QT tank fully cycled just waiting somewhere in your house ready to go just in case 1 or 2 of your fish MIGHT show signs of ich? Not to mention starring at this gorgeous 55-300 gallon tank empty for 2-3 months? What do I tell my family and friends? My fish are in the hospital they should recover shortly ..come back in the spring? Just curious?

I can understand QT for a new fish before it goes in...but many fish die in QT for various reasons (usually stress or OD). But to tear the tank down for 1 or 2 fish in a completely established tank loaded with corals whoa..........thats extreme. I have used other remedys that have worked and letting the tank lay dormant works but what a sacrifice.

Wait you said everything that is wet your talking just fish right?

My qt system is not the typical set-up and break down type that you read about, i actually have it set up and running for the past 6 years. If anything, i'd say my biofilter on my qt is as strong as that of my dt. The only thing i can imagine being stressful about my qt is the size but i consider that when i buy fish. Water quality is always tops and medication is always prophylactic regardless of how healthy the fish look. I'm extreme with my methods and i quarantine everything, from fish to chaeto. I not only have the health of the new fish in mind, but also that of the existing residents of my dt. I don't play when it comes to this expensive hobby.

i stocked my tank full of inverts before i added fish, and left the tank fishless for about 3 months. But i would put inverts through isolation for 2 months if i bought them from someone i didn't know. Corals, i get from a friend who is as anal as i am. In the end I don't quarantine so much for the fear of ich alone, there are diseases that are less forgiving. This all may seem like a lot of trouble but really its not much work, its just patience.

Dude you just don't stop do you? Everyone is going to have their own way of doing something. Who cares. There is not one person on here that has the same ways of doing things with their tank then the next person. Is it ok? Yeah sure, do whatever you want because it's your tank. You claim to be reefing for years? Good, then you should know everyone has their own opinion. If most people want to qt because you simply have not had success with it, thats fine. If you want to dip your fish and othes disagree like myself, then again, thats fine, but do yourself a favor, don't be giving advice to people claiming you are right and no one else is. Your being selfish and a baby over a stupid subject. Besides your buddy 125reefer, you two seem to only have the success with it, and still, that's fine, no one cares. but please, do all of us a favor and grow up. Your fighting over how to kill a parasite the right way, you do realize that right? Don't you have anything better to do? I mean, I'm right now dealing with my life, trying to find a job, ect... Your dealing with a silly argument that you just can't brush off your shoulders and absolutely have to be right. Just do us all a favor and put to rest.

Hey ryan where does all this anger come from? Lighten up I hope you find a job bro good luck with everything! You and araty are very upset about something? I don't get it? Maybe there is another thread for you two?

Iam simply asking a very basic question and most are giving a very simple yes or no answers. You 2 didn't answer? Maybe its better if you 2 stay away from this thread and leave so others with constructive answers and less anger can join this informative discussion...carry on mates.....:birthday:

55 gallon tank set up two tanks. Treated any fish with obvious signs of parasites. Observed any non obvious exposed fish in the other. Slowly lowered at in both tanks. Treated with copper if needed. After 5 weeks fallow transferred back to the display tank.

Very simple and easy and never had another problem.

Qt all incoming fish.

If i had to guess as to what Ryan was reacting to (well, at least it is what I am reacting to) is that this doesn't seem to be an open "opinion" thread at all. Rather you two are advocating for a method that, while it may work for you, is by and large a really bad way of doing things.

Nobody really cares what you do to your own tank, but when you start telling beginners who don't know any better that your way of doing it is preferable to the tried and true methods of getting rid of an infestation...that is the problem for me.

Thing is with boards like this, that crap advice carries the same weight as real advice based on the long term experiences of large numbers of reefers. The only way to separate the wheat from the chaff is to jump on posts like this and point out to the readers that your advice is in fact crappy.

i for one do nothing. its too much trouble to try and catch a fish to treat and plus i like my rock placement as is. i leave it up to the fish to get better, and they do. i have still yet to loose a fish to ich (knock on wood) in the past i have FW dipped for 6min at a time. it helped but never really totally fixed the issue so i gave up on doing those and thats when i started the hands of policy, and i dont interfere with the tank except for making sure corals dont sting each other. im not saying that my way is the way just that its what i do, any opinions on my method please see my signature.
