This is very logically and simply and probably someone posted something similar already
anyways heres mines
recently I've been trying use food as an incentive to get my fishes to quit hiding and swim out more

my two tangs (my prize fishes) always hide when someone approaches therefore leaving me not able to see my tangs unless i silently creep up to them

so i decided to feed on the other side of the tank...so for me
my tangs always hid in the left side of the tank... i started dropping food on the right side to get them to go out in the open to get food...
with a little success after a couple of days... i saw my naso tang started sleeping and hiding on the right side of the tank...

so i put another experiment to the test... i usually feed twice a day... once in the morning and once at night... i started to feed only at night

usually by night time the fishes are pretty hungry and they start really looking for food.. therefore they swim in the open more.. and thats when i feed them...

its been a couple of weeks but i've noticed my tangs and other fishes swim out in the open a lot more than before so it seems that its working

rewarding "active searching for food" and discouraging waking up and eat and be full

hopefully for those that have shy fishes find this useful
