That about sums it up.
A light bulb just went off in my head. Picture this...a container that holds water direcly from your main tank return. It has 2 holes at bottom that go into another box, which has 2 holes at the top of that, then another box outside of that which has another 2 holes. So you get a box within a box...etc. 3 or 4 boxes in that fashion. Most of the crap will get stuck between the layers & you can remove & rinse as needed. These are small relatively small containers that fit in your sump.
The last layer dumps into another container before reaching the sump. This last section contains cleaner water (detritus free to some degree) & dumps into your carbon, phosban...etc.
