My name is Lou. I have been tinkering with my DIY light hood for over a year now. I have had some success with a combination of 2 x54w actinic, 1 54watt 10000k, and 4 x 150 watt 6500k compact fluroscent lighting. My tank has great color in my opinion but is obviously substandard now that I have educated myself a little more about the reef hobby and some of the science that is involved with being successful.

I enjoy the DIY part of the hobby, specifically lighting. I am no scientist. I recently bought two m138/M153 ballasts and I am only finding one bulb that is matched to these ballasts in the reef aquarium world. A couple of questions:

1. Why are there so limited bulbs for these balasts

2. I paid $22 for both of the ballasts on ebay......was it a deal for my application or should I just install them in my garage and take up indoor gardening?

3. The only bulb I did find for these ballasts is Aqualine 10000 13000k 250w bulb....

a. 13000k?? Not a popular Kelvin rating. Why only in these bulbs?

b. Are these bulbs any good. Some sites have said that there is less then a 25% color loss even after 2 years....seems too good to be true

I feel that I am coming off a bit needy in this matter, but no matter how much research that I do on my own it always refers back to Sanjays expertise. There is no information that I can find explaining the questions that I have. Thank you so much for your time in advance.
