external overflow question.

If you had to use a wier /exeternal overflow, what one would you use? is there a best most reliable quietest one?

this is for a friend of mine, I just want to help him out best I can.

so if you had to use one. what one would it be and why.

I looked at the esopps ones, but they have no durso or failsafe or anything on them. i imagine they would be noisey and risky. is there a better choice?

been using a Lifereef dual for many years and still using it from my fuge into my sump..I would only use a Lifereef or Amiricle

i had an external overflow at one point i think it was pro clear, yes it was noisy but at that ime i never knew what silent was until i got the built in overflows but the external ones you can probably figure out a mid to make a durso. soo if you can get a pipe going up from the bulkhead and put a tee and then a 90 facing down. and a higher pipe on top with a cap and a small hole. i think that should help alot.

I wouldn't trust either of those types of overflows without the box there is a bigger risk of breaking siphon which would cause a flood...also the tubes would need to be modified such as a srceened cap so snails etc.. can't get in and clear tubes are the worst because they need regular cleaning from algae growth in there which looks like a PITA with those tubes..

Do you get the air bubble at the top of the U tube Mike? since the tank isn't mine I wont be there to suck out that stupid bubble every week. I know it doesn't need an aqualifter but i wish it had one for that bubble.

does anyplace local carry lifereef , or only off the web?

if your getting air bubbles stuck in the top of the tube then you need more flow...the flow is what pushes them through, but if the tubes are in a box type there should be very few if any air bubbles...as far as I know no LFS carries them ..online only ....I picked mine up used ...Amiricle uses the same design, just not the quality of a LifeReef, and can be found local.
